How to create the perfect gallery wall

Gallery walls are a great way to refresh any room by incorporating your favorite artwork and memories into your living space. We asked our interior design team for their tips on how to make sure a gallery wall looks cohesive and thoughtful and there best practices on arranging and hanging the art.

  • Before diving into hanging any artwork, layout the pieces you want to hang in your gallery wall and assess how they look together. Do they have a cohesive color palette? Keeping art pieces in a similar tone can help you avoid visual chaos.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix horizontal and vertical sizes – this will help add variety and keep the eye moving.
  • Mix up frame colors and styles to create visual interest.
  • Play with size and scale to keep the eye moving and make your gallery wall feel more collected and eclectic.
  • Don’t be afraid to add something other than “art” — three-dimensional objects like a sconce, wall hanging, or framed object can add some interest.
  •

Once you’re ready to hang your artwork, here’s a great foolproof method:

    • Start by tracing all pieces of art to be hung on a large piece of butcher paper.
    • Then, measure the distance from the top of the frame to the point where your nail will go in, and mark it with an “X”.
    • Once you’ve traced all pieces, put the templates up on your wall with painters tape – this will allow you to see your gallery wall layout and make any adjustments.
    • When you’re happy with the configuration, hammer nails on the “X’s”, hang the art pieces over their respective templates, and pull out the paper template.
