Beyond the canvas with Celia Gallego in Madrid

Sonder Spotlight is a series showcasing some of our favorite (and talented!) guests. In the spirit of Women’s History Month, whose story is better to share than that of emerging visual artist Celia Gallego? Read on to learn more about the Spanish painter and her top creative hubs in Madrid.

Born in Valladolid and based in Madrid, Celia is a self-trained artist sharing her work on social media. Although relatively new on the scene, she has exhibited at Espacio Cómplices, Galería Montsequi, and Whitelab Madrid. Deeply rooted in the new surrealism movement, Celia’s oil portraits are often striking in their vivid colors, rich textures, and exploration of the dichotomy of external beauty and internal complexities — especially in the case of her female subjects.

Given this subject matter, it’s all the more interesting that Celia chooses to share her process on platforms like TikTok. By sharing the development of her canvases on camera, Celia allows an insight into her inspirations and the inner workings of an artistic mind. Check out her go-to spots for IRL inspiration in Madrid below.
