Americans are ready to travel, according to new survey results

Hot sun. Warm salty breezes. Exploring new places. Summer is in full swing — and we wondered, are Americans ready to hit the road?

In a recent survey with Ipsos, we asked more than 2,000 people in the U.S. about their plans to travel*. Here’s what we found out:

  • Americans are ready to travel for personal reasons, domestically: 62% of those surveyed say they’ll travel for personal reasons before the end of the year.
  • Longer trips and becoming a “digital nomad” are enticing options for Americans looking to travel: 59% of Americans are interested in taking a trip for two weeks or more over the next year.
  • The majority of Americans are interested in becoming digital nomads: 59% are interested in working remotely on a long-term trip – especially younger adults aged 18-34 (74%), followed closely by family travelers (69%). And 35% of people surveyed who were planning business trips say they plan to tack on personal excursions to at least three-fourths of their business trips.
  • After a year and a half of COVID-19, Americans say their ideal trip means exploring a new city with their partner or relaxing on the beach. 52% of American travelers are most excited about a change of scenery.
  • Affordability, cleanliness, location, and safety are the top priorities for American travelers. The majority of American travelers polled (65%) will take their next trip with their partner. 19% want to travel solo, 15% with friends, and 13% with family outside of their own household.
  • New York City and New Orleans top the list of domestic destinations among Americans looking to travel in 2021. London and Rome are top of the list for international travel.

Each survey (wave of eNation) consists of a minimum of 1,000 completes with adults 18 years of age or older in the contiguous U.S.A. The sample consists of individuals selected from the online segment of Ipsos’ iSay Panel partner online panel sources, and “river” sampling and is balanced to be representative of the general population based upon region, gender, age, race/ethnicity, education, and household income data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
