Escape the cold this winter with Sonder

This winter, trade those dreary cold months for constant sunshine and warm nights. The concept of “snowbirding” has been around for a while, but with an unprecedented winter ahead, more people (us included!) are considering heading south for the winter. Here are a few destinations we’ve been eyeing lately – all of which have Sonders!

Palm Springs

With 350 days of sunshine a year, there is never a bad time to visit Palm Springs. Its laid back desert vibes are the perfect remedy for the winter doldrums. There are plenty of chic local boutiques open for business and funky desert museums to check out. Joshua Tree National Park and all its splendor are a short drive away. Don’t miss Pioneertown and the lovely local bar; Pappy & Harriet’s. Our newest location at the Sonder V Palm Springs makes a perfect home base for your explorations.

Miami

If you have your heart set on warm water fun, then you can’t go wrong with Miami. During the winter months, Miami has the warmest ocean water in the continental US. Rent a jet ski or a speedboat and enjoy the perfect socially distanced activity. When you’ve had your fill of watersports, check out the highly Instagrammable Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, it has one of the best views of the skyline. There are also plenty of restaurants taking advantage of Miami’s warm nights with outdoor seating and takeout. If you need a place to stay in the Magic City, we’ve got you covered.

San Diego

If you’re looking for a beachier vibe, San Diego might be your spot. Boasting 31 beaches to choose from, you’ll definitely be able to work on your tan. Just don’t expect the water to be warm — it drops into the 60s in the winter. At night, take in a drive-in movie or eat at one of the many restaurants now offering outdoor seating. For more San Diego suggestions, see our previous post on discovering it with your family. See all of our San Diego accommodations here.

Mexico City

In CDMX, June to September is the wettest time of year. Avoid the rainy season and visit in the winter, where you can expect dry, warm days with temps around 70. Don’t forget your warm clothes though, as the temp drops fast when the sun goes down. The largest city in Latin America has plenty to offer during the winter months. From world-class museums and the Day of the Dead celebration to Mexican wrestling and exquisite food options, the possibilities in Mexico’s capital city are endless. And good news — we’ve just opened our first Sonder in the trendy Condesa neighborhood, central to beautiful, tree-lined avenues with hip sidewalk cafes, upscale boutiques, and an opulent nightlife.

There are over a dozen other Sonder locations to explore in warmer-weather cities this year, and many are set-up for longer term stays, with fully-equipped kitchens and in-unit laundry, making it easy to travel for weeks on-end. Check out some of our favorites like Phoenix, Austin, New Orleans, Orlando, San Antonio, and Savannah.
